Fall sports roundup

Women’s tennis

Junior Charlotte Garvin came up just short in her quest to return to the Midwest Conference Championship match, advancing to the semifinals of the number two singles flight of the MWC Tennis Singles Championships.

Garvin breezed through her first two matches, but lost to defending MWC champion Clothilde Thirouin from Grinnell College in a tight 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 match.

Junior Dana Pierce and seniors Emiley Brand and Sarah Bolitho were the other point earners for the Prairie Fire. After losing their first round matches, both Pierce and Brand rattled off two straight wins in consolation play, but lost in their respective consolation finals. Bolitho, however, was able to claim the consolation championship at the number five singles flight with an 8-1 victory against Alison Thies of Ripon College.

As a team, Knox placed eighth, with Grinnell taking the MWC title.

The Knox College volleyball team dropped a pair of MWC games last weekend, falling to Carroll University and Ripon College 3-0.

Against Carroll, Knox fell into the same trap in each of the three sets. The Prairie Fire took early leads in each of the three sets only to see it slip away with a large response from the Pioneers. In the first set, Carroll used a nine-point rally to help secure a 25-17 set win. The second featured an eight-point rally in a 25-14 loss for the Prairie Fire, while the second nine-point rally of the match helped Carroll seal a 25-19 win in the third and final set.

Junior Kaylie Prince led the team with nine kills. Sophomore Casey Stalcheski netted 15 assists.

The next day, Knox looked to gain their first home win of the season, but instead found their losing streak extended to a season high 10 games. Ripon claimed the match 25-13, 25-16, 25-18, moving Knox to 2-24 on the year and 0-6 in the MWC.

Men’s soccer

It was another tough weekend for the Knox College men’s soccer team, which lost on the road to conference leader Lake Forest 3-0.

The Prairie Fire battled throughout the first half and found themselves deadlocked in a scoreless tie to start the second half. But a 12-minute stretch that featured all three Lake Forest goals turned the game completely.

Knox (5-6-2, 1-3-2 MWC) was held without a goal for the first time this season as the team failed to get a shot on goal in what was a rough and hard fought game. Six yellow cards were handed out with 22 fouls called in the contest.
