Sports Briefs: Gasol wins NBA Defensive Player of the Year

Mark Gasol named NBA’s top defender

DALLAS — Mark Gasol received the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award after heading the Memphis Grizzlies’ defense, one of the stingiest defenses in the NBA. The Grizzlies were ranked second in the NBA during the regular season in defensive efficiency and were 6.8 points per 100 possessions better when Gasol was on the court. He averaged 1.74 blocks, 1.0 steals, and 7.8 rebounds per game, earning him 212 points and 30 first-place votes for the award. Accusations against Auburn ‘absurd’

Manhattan, N.Y. — In lieu of recent reports against Auburn, athletic director Jay Jacobs attacked the allegations made by roopstigo.com’s Selena Roberts. Roberts alleged that the Tigers have several instances of academic fraud and offered financial incentives to players to stay at Auburn for their senior year, among other violations. Jacobs claims the report by Roberts contains “numerous inaccuracies and misrepresentations” and that Auburn’s independent review concluded there was no evidence for the allegations. Several former players, who denied having accepted financial incentives to stay at the school, backed Jacobs in his defense of the school. (Source: CBS Sports)

Plaque honoring Bonds declared missing

New York — The plaque that honored Barry Bonds’ 756th home run has gone missing from its home in AT&T Park. The Giants are investigating the matter, and have yet to come up with any evidence for its disappearance. Bonds finished his 2007 season with a record-setting 762 career home runs and has not played since. He still returns to the ballpark occasionally, where he receives standing ovations despite the allegations of his alleged steroid use. Bonds has denied these reports even after being convicted in 2003 for obstruction of justice.(Source: ESPN)
