Prairie Fire news briefs

Elliott named associate women’s head coach

GALESBURG – Following a record-breaking season in which the Prairie Fire offense averaged 87.4 points per game (the third highest average in DIII and a new school record), David Elliott has been promoted to the role of associate head women’s basketball coach. Elliott completed his first full season as Emily Cline’s full time assistant coach last year. In addition to setting a school record for points per game, the Prairie Fire set records in field goals made, three-pointers made, free throws made and attempted, while leading the MWC in forced turnovers per game (27) and turnover margin (6.09).

Carroll to leave Midwest Conference in 2016

GRINNELL, IA. – Carroll President Doug Hastad announced last week that Carroll University will join the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin following the beginning of the 2016-17 academic year. Carroll vacated its spot in the conference after being a member from 1955 to 1992. Since ‘92, Carroll has won 31 team championships in the MWC. The move was reportedly due to the “geographic proximity and history with the CCIW” that Carroll has. “Speaking for the ten continuing members of the MWC, we will miss the spirited competition and the fine sportsmanship of the student-athletes from Carroll University,” said MWC Chair and Monmouth College President Mauri Ditzler.

Hopes at MWC title run dashed for baseball

GALESBURG – After the Prairie Fire dropped all four games of their season series against Grinnell their conference record dropped to 2-10, which eliminated any chance the team had at a playoff run. Just one year removed from a record-setting season in which the team recorded 22 victories (including an impressive 13-3 conference record), the program is now sitting in dead last in the MWC South. The team has been anemic on the road, winning only twice in nine contests.
