In an email touching on the contentious issue of mandatory reporting, President Teresa Amott reaffirmed that for now, all college faculty and staff, including student resident advisors (RAs) remain obligated to report all suspected incidents of sexual assault to the Title IX coordinator.
The email, did, however, mention that new guidelines from the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) may indicate that adjunct faculty, as well as dining services and custodial workers, could possibly be exempt from these requirements at some point in the future.
During the upcoming OCR visit, the school will seek clarification about those groups, as well as additional groups that may not fall under the definition of “responsible employees” that are required to forward all suspected cases to the coordinator. Depending on the official recommendation of the OCR, the criteria as to who constitutes a mandatory reporter could change.
The email also said that later this week, faculty and staff will receive additional information that will outline their reporting responsibilities as well as resources that are available to survivors of sexual assault.
