Champions League begins to take shape

Now that the Champion’s League is in full swing, there are constantly games to look forward to on a weekly basis.

Arsenal vs. A.S. Monaco: Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 1:45 p.m: Although the owner of Monaco has had to crack down on the financial profligacy enjoyed in the past and the club has lost its major stars, this should be a game to enjoy; especially so for Arsene Wenger, who will be taking an enjoyable trip down memory lane. After all, Wenger managed Monaco from 1987 to 1994, where he first mentored a young Thierry Henry, a player he would later take with him to Arsenal, where Henry would become one of the most iconic players to ever wear an Arsenal jersey. He also brought along another young man from Monaco by the name of Emmanuel Petit, a name all Arsenal fans remember with warm smiles. It is all the more special for Wenger as he is the longest-serving manager for both Arsenal and Monaco. I predict a score of 3-1 in Arsenal’s favor.

Manchester United vs. Sunderland: Saturday, Feb. 28 at 9 a.m: Prediction of 3-1 win in United’s favor, though they have been in extremely shaky form this season.

Manchester City vs. Liverpool: Sunday, March 1 at 6 a.m: Prediction of a 2-1 win in Liverpool’s favor. The Reds have been in a rich vein of form recently, with the return of Daniel Sturridge, Sterling easing back into his best and the rise of Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Ibe. The Liverpool fans will be especially proud of Ibe, an academy player taking full control of his opportunity in the first team much like Sterling once did. Liverpool also has the home field advantage, giving them a psychological edge.

Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspurs Sunday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m:

This will be a thrilling game, with Chelsea looking to extract revenge on one of the few teams to have defeated them in this campaign. Last time the Spurs spoilt Chelsea’s party, with Harry Kane scoring two sublime goals. The odds are very much in Chelsea’s favor as they will be playing at their fortress, Stamford Bridge. Prediction: 3-2 win to Chelsea.

Arsenal vs. Everton: Sunday, March 1 at 8 a.m:

Everton has been abysmal this campaign, which is unfortunate with the quality present in the squad. The players seem to have lost the understanding they once enjoyed. Arsenal, on the other hand, is feeling resurgent, with good showings in their last two matches. A prediction of 2-0 in Arsenal’s favor.

Barcelona vs. Manchester City (2-1):

It is such a rare sight to see Lionel Messi miss a goal scoring opportunity that spectators the world over were shell shocked when he completely fluffed a shot at an open goal. But the miss takes nothing away from Messi and company’s performance. The first half of the game was Barcelona at their best, in full swagger with a spring in each player’s step. It was a dominant performance capped by two goals from Luis Suarez, a player who seems to have rediscovered the form that made him the nightmare of defenses throughout Europe. Man City gave a valiant effort in the second half with Silva creating a chance for Sergio Aguero to laser the ball into the net in the 69th minute. But City were left to rue what might have been when Gael Clichy gained an unnecessary second yellow card. A great game.
